PERSONAL PROJECT #3: ABSTRACTION
I used Pinterest and Flickr to help with my research:
The Formal Elements
The following list describes some of the abstract elements in any photograph:
Focus: Which areas appear clearest or sharpest in the photograph? Which do not?
Light: Which areas of the photograph are brightest? Are there any shadows? Does the photograph allow you to guess the time of day? Is the light natural or artificial? Harsh or soft? Reflected or direct?
Line: Are there objects in the photograph that act as lines? Are they straight, curvy, thin, thick? Do the lines create direction in the photograph? Do they outline? Do the lines show movement or energy?
Repetition: Are there any objects, shapes or lines which repeat and create a pattern?
Shape: Do you see geometric (straight edged) or organic (curvy) shapes? Which are they?
Space: Is there depth to the photograph or does it seem shallow? What creates this appearance? Are there important negative (empty) spaces in addition to positive (solid) spaces? Is there depth created by spatial illusions i.e. perspective?
Texture: If you could touch the surface of the photograph how would it feel? How do the objects in the picture look like they would feel?
Value/Tone: Is there a range of tones from dark to light? Where is the darkest value? Where is the lightest?

ResearchOne photographer that gave me a lot of inspiration is John Baldessari. When he takes images he blocks out certain parts of the image to disguise the image by putting dots. This gave me inspiration to make some images of my own by using Post It notes and to experiment with focus.

My second set
I spent a long time arranging the notes on the window. I wanted to try to capture the way the shapes changed. I tried focusing on the notes and on the view outside. I used coloured dot stickers as well as the notes to see what effect this would have. I liked the way the building slowly disappeared behind the coloured squares. In some pictures you can still see the view but in other ones it has gone completely.
My third set
I decided to experiment some more with different arrangements of notes. I added some tape to create patterns on the windows. I also experimented with point of view.
I picked four of my favourite photos and then edited them with the Camera Bag app which made these images. I am going to mount these four photos on to card and I am going to take some photos of the development of the mounting stage.
From taking these pictures I wanted to make a bigger piece and ended up with these. I'm going to mount them on to big pieces of board.
